For my Final Portfolio I chose the theme "Religion". I thought it was the perfect topic since it is so broad. There was also a lot of interpretation to make it my own and truly show who I am through my artwork. Religion is something that means a lot to me. I think it's really important to be able to believe in you religion and express yourself through it. Every religion is so unique and different. I enjoy being able to compare different traditions and I think it's interesting how all religions are expressing the same thoughts and beliefs but in different ways. This interest sparked the idea for my Final Portfolio.
I was able to incorporate my theme into my artwork by talking each religions symbol. Most religions have a symbol that people are able to recognize and associate with their religion. For example Christianity is associated with the cross and Hinduism is associated with the OM symbol. I chose watercolor and pen and ink for my Final Portfolio. I thought it would bring out each religions symbol with the watercolor and the black would be nice contrast to my artwork. The main challenge I experienced was being able to come up with different designs to go inside the symbols. I solved this by mixing previous designs I used and some new designs. I am really proud of my Final Portfolio. I put in a lot of effort and I think it really shows through. I love the simplicity of the watercolor designs in the background. I think the colors work together really well and the deigns stand out against it. In my opinion this really shows how I have grown over the course. At the beginning of the course I was only able to draw structured objects and my goal was to be able to do more abstract work, which I think I was able to do.

For this unit, I used different elements to create a geometric elephant face. I chose the element shape since my entire picture is made up of triangles. When I began this project I started by making a list of possible ideas to brainstorm, the picture is shown below. All these ideas evolved through the insprirtation of different elements. Then I proceded to pick my favorite idea, images made of shapes. I decided to do some research on the internet to find some examples I could use. This was all done during my design phase. My artwork relates to the element shape since my entire drawing is made of triangles. The main element my artwork demonstrates is shape but it also includes other elements. Color and lines are also used. I colored in my design, which demonstrated color and I made all my triangles out of straight lines, which shows the element lines. All three of these elements came together to make my project complete. A picture of my artwork is down below.
In this unit we learned how to use limitations to create art work. Artists choose to use limitations to make their artwork more unique and interesting and that is exactly what we were doing. When you use a limitation to create artwork its more raw and it speaks for it self better. When people view art with a limitation they first of all appreciate it more considering you didn't use conventional materials. They also relate to the artwork since they have (in most cases) used and worked with the unconventional materials, used in the artwork, at some other point. Making art with limitations can be challenging or ridiculously easy, it all depends on how you choose to deal with it. By this i mean you can either choose to make your artwork with the first thing you see, or you can look at all the things you cant do since you are limited. This makes the art making process different then it would normally be. In my case i used a knitting needle so it allowed me to free myself. In some other cases it makes you think harder about what your particular limitation has to offer you. I really enjoyed his unit and i learnt that limitation are a good way to learn something about yourself and explore what other hidden talents you might have. The picture to the left is my practice/experiment and the one to the right is my final piece.
In our latest unit, we based our artwork on a cause or problem affecting our world. My topic was hunger and starvation. My art is about the third world countries, who don't have enough food to eat. One out of every seven people go to bed hungry at night. This isn't even the worst part. The worst part is that lots of countries waste food. "2 billion people could be fed for a year with the amount the USA alone throws away each year." according to TreeHugger.com. I really wanted my artwork to represent these statistics accurately. That's why I decided to show it by drawing a very simple, graphic picture of a spoon with a globe on it. The spoon is representing food and eating, while the globe represents the population of people who starve. The handle of the spoon also has some shocking statistics on how many people don't have enough to eat. I really hope my artwork send out a powerful message on food wastage and starvation in our world today. A picture of my artwork is below.
